How nice should a logo be?

One of the things that really wastes time is logo design. There are so many philosophies around logo design.

I once worked remotely with company bi in the Bahamas. They had a document of 86 pages, I think. It was all about their colors and logo and branding online and file naming conventions.

You dare not mess up.
For example, they had two logos for different parts of the company.
The company is into real estate, so they provide both products and services.
The service side of their website had a different logo from the product side of the website.

If a house is sold, the logo designer gets a commission because the logo was put on the sales flyer. That was the first time I realized that logo designers can sell their design as a service. So you must read the entire document to know which logo goes where.

In terms of the “beauty” of a logo, I am of the view that if Apple can succeed with a “half-eaten” apple fruit as a logo, anything can be used as a logo.

Against this philosophy background, last Thursday, I designed these two simple logo versions. The Red, Gold, Green, and Black square is a shorter version of any of the two versions produced.

Yes, you sometimes need a shorter version of your logo. It is not everywhere that your entire logo will fit.
A typical example is the “site icon” / “favicon” on your website.

For the short version, I stole the design of Microsoft. But I changed the colors to Red, Gold, Green, and Black.

I settled on the one I’ve circled, and that will be the long logo for the Data Africa Ltd company I registered.
